Dear Winifred, you will not believe who came back to the Palais on Thursday night. Mr Reynard, bold as brass, in the same pinstripe jacket he wore the summer you left for Brighton, the one with the silk handkerchief folded just so at the breast. He had his hat in one hand and a cigarette case in the other, and every girl on the floor stopped dancing to look at him. Not one of us could have said why he drew the eye. Perhaps it was the way he walked, very upright on those long black shoes, as though the floor had been laid especially for him.

He asked Mrs Gedge for a waltz, which I thought a dreadful risk, since she has never once been allowed a partner who did not first ask her husband. She laughed and gave him her hand anyway. They went round twice without a word, his tail brushing the hem of her frock, and when the band changed to a foxtrot he bowed and stepped back as neat as a clerk closing a ledger. The whole room applauded. I saw him slip a folded note into the lining of her glove, and I have never seen Mrs Gedge blush so deeply.
