Sleeping fox head on a lower leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

A sleeping fox face is shown with closed eyes, a dark nose and whiskers, drawn with bold black outlines around the ears and muzzle. The fox is filled with soft orange, red and cream shading that blends into loose, painterly edges, with a faint second fox outline behind it. The tattoo sits on a bare leg against a blurred wooden floor, with the photo taken straight on.

By the third hour the lorry queue at Harrow Ford had stopped being a queue and become a village, with its own bakery van and its own argument about the hut's broken kettle. You have the window down and a flask of tea going cold between your knees. Ahead, the officer in the glass box is turning passports over as if each one owes him money.

Behind you in the cab, the old fox you took off the farm at Lenney is asleep on a folded tarpaulin. Not a real fox, you'd tell anyone who asked, just a fox in a wooden crate with a tag tied to the lid and a permit that says otherwise. Her eyes are shut, and her whiskers twitch whenever the engine idles. The paperwork in the glovebox is the only thing in the cab that has been lying for her.

When your name is called you walk forward with the papers, and the officer reads them twice. Then he reads the crate. "Is that alive?" he asks. "Asleep," you say. He studies the closed lid, the faint breath-mist on the mesh, and then you, for a long time. Somewhere down the line a horn sounds and nobody moves.

He tears the form in half, stamps the other half, and slides it back under the glass. "Go on, then," he says. "She's had a long day too." The barrier lifts. In the wing mirror, as you pull away, the dust on the tarmac holds a faint shape of russet and cream, and the fox in the crate does not open her eyes once all the way up into the hills.
