Colour tattoo of a cat wearing a top hat, monocle and bow tie inside an oval frame above a red rose, on the upper arm.

Cat in top hat and monocle with rose on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A realistic brown tabby cat with a top hat, monocle and grey bow tie is shown in an oval frame with a scalloped teal and red border. A red rose with green leaves sits below the frame, outlined in black. Shading is smooth and detailed on the cat's fur and eyes, while the frame and rose use bold traditional colour on a plain skin background.

Dear Nell,

You will not believe what the Pearsons' tom has got into now. Mr Fenwick's old top hat went missing from the chapel cloakroom on Sunday, and I found it on Monday morning sitting on Bertha, the cat, as proud as you like. Then on Tuesday the monocle turned up, which Mr Fenwick swears he left in his waistcoat pocket, though nobody has seen him wear it since the Brackley shaft shut. Somebody has been dressing that cat like a bank manager.

I am not complaining. Since the cage went down at Number Four in March, the whole row has been quiet in a way that frightens me. Men sit on their steps and do not talk. Mrs Gorman stopped singing. But when that cat walked up Front Street on Wednesday with the bow tie just so, a boy from the rows followed it all the way to the station and back, laughing until he had the hiccups. I saw Tom Weir's wife stand at her gate and wipe her eyes, and she was not crying about the cat.

Mr Fenwick came round yesterday to ask for the hat back. He stood in my yard with his cap in his hands and said the cat could keep it. He had brought a red rose from his wife's bush by the back wall, and he pinned it to Bertha's collar himself, very carefully, as if it were a medal. I think he was pleased. I think he likes the thought of something in the village still going about with its head up.

Write soon, and tell Ma I have not let the cat near the good tablecloth, though I have not stopped him sitting on it either.

Love, Annie
