Anubis and Eye of Horus on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A seated Anubis figure holds a flame and a staff, with hanging scales on either side and a winged Eye of Horus across the top. Below, a pyramid, a rising sun, four-point stars and a faceted gemstone shape complete the composition. Bold black outlines, solid black fills and grey shading are used throughout, with no colour ink.

Dear Nell, you'll think I've gone soft, but I've been sat up with the brass scales since Tuesday, the ones Mr Ashdown kept under the counter for weighing gold. A man came in last week with a carved black figure no longer than my hand, a jackal-headed fellow seated on a plinth, a little lamp in one hand and a crook in the other. He wanted four pounds on it. I told him the figure was worth more for its weight in lead than for its story, and he laughed and said that was the trouble with everything.

I set it in the left pan out of habit. The right pan took a shilling, then a second, then Mr Ashdown's pocket watch, and still the thing sat heavy and the pans hung crooked. Then, God forgive me, I put in the pawn ticket with my own name on it, the one for Father's watch that I swore I'd redeem by spring. The beam settled level for the first time since I took the shop over. Mr Ashdown always said the scales only tell you what you've already decided.
So I gave him his figure back at a fair price, and I've kept the ticket in the drawer with the broken spectacles. I'll redeem the watch on Friday, with the wages, even if it takes the whole month.
Come up on Sunday and we'll weigh the watch together. I suspect the feather will be heavier than either of us expects.
