Mountain lake and peony in a diamond on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo on the outer thigh shows a diamond shape containing mountains, clouds, a line of conifers and a lake with its reflection. A large peony with leaves sits beneath the diamond, and the stippled shading and fine outlines give the design a soft, textured finish. The composition is centred and the design fills most of the frame.

Sit nearer, the fire only warms the front of you, and the back of you has to earn its own heat. I'll tell you about the lake under the house at Saint Oswin's, the one that sat in the cup of the mountains like a coin in a palm. The old abbot said it was the only honest thing in the valley, because it showed you exactly what stood over it and never once pretended otherwise.

In the year the snow came early, a novice called Teodor was sent down to fetch the peonies that grew in the ruined cloister garden. Brother Gregor had planted them in his youth and nobody had the heart to let them die. Teodor dug the roots carefully, wrapped them in wet sacking, and carried them up the path with his chin tucked into his collar. At the shore he stopped, because the lake had gone perfectly still, and in it the peaks stood upside down, pine line and all, with a second cloud drifting beneath the first.

He asked the lake which of the two worlds he was supposed to be standing in. It gave him no answer, so he knelt and planted the roots in the stony soil by the water, where the flowers would have to look at their reflections every morning. The peonies bloomed that summer, heavy and pale, and every one of them turned its face to the water.

The novice never went back to the cloister. Brother Gregor said that was the lesson, and I have told it to you the way he told it to me, though I still think he was only pleased with the flowers.
