Eye in triangle on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black and grey eye sits inside a triangle with fine radiating lines behind it, forming the main image on the forearm. A figure-like dark shape with soft, smudged shading descends below the eye, and a thin red triangle outline frames the design. A small red dot with a single fine line sits higher up the arm, and the composition is shown from the front against a dark background.

Dear Nell,

The line still won't close. I have walked the boundary of Hollin Wood three times with the theodolite on its tripod, and each time the bearings drift a little east, as if the trees have been shifting their roots in the night. Mr Ashby at the parish office says I am tired. I told him the instrument is never tired. Its one round eye is the only honest thing in this village, and it does not care whether the church wants the wood or the mill does.

On Thursday a red balloon came loose from a child at the lychgate and floated over the hedge into the trees. I went after it because the string had tangled in my sighting line and I could not leave the work half done. The ground under the oaks went soft and grey, and the bracken lay down flat as I passed, like a crowd making room. When I looked back, the village had gone small and triangular in the glass, with the spire at its point.

I found the balloon caught on a stile of pale timber I will not describe to you. It was still tugging, still red. I wound the string round my wrist and walked back out by the sun, and I have not sighted the boundary since.

Ashby came round this morning with his ledger and asked where the line was. I pointed at the eye of the glass and told him it was closed. He did not look. Nobody in Hollin looks at the wood any more, and I have decided that is the arrangement I will keep.
