Orange jellyfish with teal wash on ribs

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A large jellyfish with a glowing orange bell and long red tentacles drifts diagonally across the side of the torso. The bell is shaded with soft blends and highlights, while the tentacles fade from red to pink and blue-grey toward the lower edge. A loose teal wash sits behind the jellyfish, giving a sense of water around the subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Joe, I went to the coast on Sunday on the charabanc with the chapel women, the first time I have seen the sea since we married. Your mother would have laughed at me, standing at the harbour wall with my hat in my hand like a fool at a funeral. The water was that green-blue you always talked about, the colour of the wash your Uncle Dai used on the kitchen ceiling.

Out past the breakwater there was a jellyfish, a great orange thing as big as the table in our front room, glowing under the surface like a lamp somebody had carried down to the bottom of the sea. Its arms trailed behind it in red ribbons, long as washing lines. Mrs Pryce said they sting, so we kept back, but the thing drifted in on the tide until it was almost under our feet, as if it had come up to see who was watching.

I thought of you two hundred yards under the Cwm, where you say the only light is what you carry on your cap. I told myself that creature had no notion it was beautiful, that it only went where the water took it, and I found I envied it a little. I stayed on the wall long after the others had gone back to the charabanc, and Mrs Pryce called me a daft article twice before I came away.

The lamp was still there when I looked back from the road. Come up with me next Sunday, if the overman will let you go. The pit will keep one day without you, and the sea will not wait for anybody. Your loving Nell.
