Aquarius hands holding a crescent moon
Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing of two cupped hands holding a crescent moon, with water dripping from the fingers and a constellation of star bursts arcing across the top. The fine hatched and stippled linework builds dark shading behind the hands, leaving the hands and drips in plain white. The word aquarius is written in script at the base of the sheet.

The rain had been falling on the reservoir for eleven days when Marguerite finally went down to the water with a jam jar and a torch. Her grandmother had always said that the sky emptied itself into the hands of whoever stood still long enough, and that the trick was to cup them the way you would carry a moth out of the kitchen. Marguerite did not believe her, but she was twelve and bored, and the village had been drowning in its own gutters since spring.

She found the crescent on the shingle bank, lying in a shallow pool like a fishhook somebody had dropped. It was cold enough to ache. It was also, she was almost certain, glowing faintly at the edges, the way the inside of a shell does when you hold it to a lamp. She knelt, lifted it with both hands, and felt the water running off it in threads between her fingers, each drop pulling a little of the dark out of the air as it fell.
By morning the rain had stopped. The old men on the jetty swore the sky was clearer than they had seen it in years, and a line of starbursts hung over the hills where there had never been stars before, joined by thin pencil strokes as if someone had sketched a path for the ferry. Marguerite kept the moon in the jam jar on her windowsill. Every night she tipped out a little of its light onto the floor, and every night the drips dried into small white flowers that the cleaner, who never noticed anything, swept up without a second thought.
