Fine line botanical design with dots and swirls
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a tattoo design on a plain cream background. It combines outlined flower heads and leaves with a crescent-like arc, a dotted line, scattered dots and curling swirls that trail down a vertical stem. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the composition is tall and narrow.

The soil there was cold and full of old roots. I had been told that nothing grew under the crescent of the wall unless you coaxed it, so I coaxed. I knelt in the wet and sowed foxglove seed where the shadow fell longest.

The abbot's clerk came each Thursday with his ledger and a length of knotted cord, marking the bounds of the orchard. He pegged the line in dots, one peg every stride, and when I asked why he did not simply draw a straight edge he said the land had never agreed to be straight. I thought about this while I pinched out the curling shoots that wanted to climb the rose stem, and I began to tie them back, one loop at a time, as if the garden were writing me a letter I was expected to answer.
By midsummer the foxgloves had risen in a tall, narrow column and the bees had found them before I did. Anselm walked the border with his hands behind his back, stopped beside the line of peg-holes, and said nothing for a long while. Then he pressed a single bloom between two slates and handed it to me. "Keep this one," he said. "It is the first thing you have grown that did not need you to watch it."
