Unicorn, moon and daisy design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A greyscale pencil drawing of a unicorn head in profile, with a flowing mane and a spiralled horn, set within an oval frame. A large moon and a dark castle silhouette sit behind the head, with swirling scrolls and star-like sparkles around the edges. Three daisy-style flowers and curling foliage fill the lower part of the composition, shaded with soft pencil tones.

The lift stopped between the ninth and tenth floors of Kestle House, and Nadia Pryce pressed the alarm three times before she accepted that nobody was coming. Everyone had warned her about the lift. They warned you about it the way they warned you about the wind on the walkways and the gulls that nicked chips out of your hand. She sat down on the cold floor with her shopping and looked at the steel wall, where someone had drawn a horse with a spiralled horn in pencil, then gone over the lines so often the metal had taken the shine off them.

The horse had a moon behind its head, and a castle, and a ring of daisies curling round its neck like a collar. Nadia knew whose work it was. Ivy Coyle in flat 62 drew on everything since her husband died: birthday cards, parking tickets, the backs of envelopes from the council. Nadia had assumed it was vandalism until she saw the tiny stars Ivy had scattered across the border, each one placed with the care of someone who had nothing else to do with her hands. She traced the spiral with one finger and felt the grooves of the graphite.

The lift jerked upward and stopped again. Through the grille came the thump of a walking stick. "Still in there, love?" It was Ivy, leaning over the gap above. "Caretaker's coming. It does that when the weather turns."

"You drew this?" Nadia asked.

"Years ago, when they were going to knock the whole estate down. I thought if I put something bright on a wall, the men with clipboards might feel bad about it." A pause, then a rustle. "They didn't. But the horse is still here."

The doors shuddered open on the tenth floor. Ivy stood on the landing, a daisy from her window box in her hand, and tucked it into the pocket of Nadia's cardigan before she could refuse. Behind them, through the stairwell window, the pumping station turrets stood black against a moon that looked, from that angle, exactly like the one in the drawing.
