Armour, ribcage, lungs and heart on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four anatomical and armour motifs are stacked vertically down the forearm, from a plated chest or shoulder piece at the top to a heart at the bottom. The outlines are bold and even, with solid black fills and hatched detail on the ribs, lungs and armour. The image is black and white, with a dark patterned fabric behind the arm and part of another tattoo visible at the right edge.

The snow shut the pass on the ninth day of Advent, and the inn at Cold Harrow took in eleven strangers who had been walking for a week. One of them was a sergeant named Piet Varga, who came in with a breastplate and shoulder plates strapped over his coat and would not take them off to eat. The innkeeper's girl, Ilse, watched him set his bowl down carefully, as if the iron might spill out of him.

On the tenth night she heard him coughing through the wall, a wet rattle like a bellows with a hole in it. In the morning he unbuckled the plates and stood them by the hearth. "Keep them," he said. "I can't carry them over the top." Ilse asked why anyone would walk so far in iron. He said armour was only good for what it kept out, and in his years it had kept out spears and nothing else.
When the thaw came the road opened, and Piet was gone with it. The plates stood on by the hearth, empty as a coat on a peg. Ilse set a crust inside the breastplate each night, because her mother had told her that a thing left empty will not stay so for long, and by March a wren had nested in the shoulder piece. In April she carried the iron down to the river and found that it weighed almost nothing at all.
