Anatomical heart with leaves on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
An anatomical heart is the central subject, drawn with dense engraved hatching and surrounded by brown and orange leaves, a green bud and a geometric lotus-style flower over the lower half. The linework is bold and dark with fine stippled shading, and the palette is mainly muted browns and greys with green and teal accents. The design wraps the forearm, with the heart placed in the middle and foliage extending to the top and bottom edges of the frame.

Nobody in Cardenas Flat would sell a heart to the stonecutter's boy, so he cut his own from the grey shale above the wash road. He worked through three summers of drought, scratching the shape of the thing he had seen in his uncle's medical book, every chamber and vessel, the little hatched shadows that made it look as though it had weight.

Travellers on the desert road began to stop at his hut because the hearts he carved could be held up to a lamp, and the light went through the thin places and showed the blood paths glowing like cracks in a river bed. Each one carried a leaf or two. He took a brown leaf for a sack of flour and a copper leaf for a jug of water, and the green bud was the one thing nobody could explain, because nothing green grew within a day's walk in any direction.
In the fourth autumn a woman came up the road with a bundle of dry lotus seed from the far oasis, which she said her mother had kept in a tin for longer than the road had existed. He asked what she wanted carved. She said nothing. She wanted him to plant the seed in the wash where the rain would reach it, and to set the heart stone above it, facing east.
The rain came in January, and the lotus opened in the wash by March, pale and stiff as a folded letter. He never carved another heart. The road still runs straight past his hut, and the drivers say that if you lay your palm on the cold shale at dawn, you can feel something beating under the stones, slow and patient, like a thing that has decided to stay.
