Black and grey Japanese-style waves filling a triangle outline, tattooed on the forearm.

Wave-filled triangle on a forearm

Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows stylised ocean waves with curling crests packed inside a solid black triangle outline. The waves are built from clean, layered black linework with grey-toned shading and fine parallel lines in the water. The design sits centrally on a smooth, lightly lit forearm against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sea was never meant to be drawn, the Chancellor of Halmouth told you on your first morning, so the Crown had given you a triangle of brass and a pot of black ink. Inside its three sides you were to keep the waves. Outside them lay the harbour, the salt pans, the fishwives who sold eels by the bell. Each dawn you drew the swell as it rose, crest by crest, and let no wave escape the frame.

For eleven years the waves obeyed. They curled where you told them to curl and broke against the brass like well-trained hounds. Then, one grey morning in the month of thaw, a swell rose higher than the rest and would not stop at the line. It spilled over the corner of the frame and ran down the page toward your wrist, cold as a fish's belly, and you felt the ink in your veins turn briny.

Now the Chancellor sends clerks to count your strokes. They find nothing wrong, only more water than there was the day before, and a gull that circles the tower at noon and will not land. You have stopped sleeping in the attic. You sleep at the desk with the pen still wet in your hand, listening to the sea breathe through the paper.

At dawn you lift the brass and let the last crest fall outward. It runs down the tower stairs, across the cobbles and into the harbour, where the fishwives hitch their skirts and laugh. Behind you the frame stays empty, a clean bright edge, and for the first time in the history of Halmouth the tide comes in on its own.
