Armoured knight on horseback with axe

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A mounted armoured knight raises an axe in one hand and holds a shield bearing a black eagle, riding a dark horse with ornate chain and strap details. Smoky clouds and flames in orange and red fill the background, with a flying bird shape above. Soft shading and blended tones give the figures volume, and the composition fills the full width of the back.

The lift in Calder House has stuck between the ninth and tenth floors, and the emergency line has rung in the caretaker's office for forty minutes before anyone thought to send you up. You take the stairs with a torch in your teeth, past doors smelling of fried onions and fabric conditioner, past the stairwell mural somebody painted the summer before the estate was sold: a rider on a black horse, shield raised, a double-headed eagle in gold paint gone the colour of weak tea.

Inside the lift shaft the cable hums. You lean out over the gap and the torch catches a nest wedged in the pulley housing, a mess of twigs, carrier bag and one long black feather still stiff with rain. A pigeon has been nesting above the brakes. You think of the rider on the wall below, who rode through smoke with an axe held high and never once had to worry about a bird on a gear. Your fingers are cold. You clear the twigs with a spanner handle, one fistful at a time, and the bird bursts out into the stairwell so close you have to duck.

Mrs Okonedo's radio is still playing when the car drops an inch and the doors shudder open on her landing. She is standing there in her dressing gown with one hand on her chest. "I thought we were done for," she says. You tell her it was only the bird. She laughs, then looks past you at the stairs, where the grey light from the landing window falls across the painted horse and turns the flames at its hooves almost orange again.

On the way down you stop on the mural landing and wipe the dust off the shield with your sleeve. The eagle comes up darker than you remembered, gold under the grime. Somewhere above, the pigeon is circling the block, waiting for the lift to go quiet. Back in the office you write "birds, pulley, cleared" in the logbook and underline it twice, because nobody ever reads past the first line.
