Standing Ganesha with mouse and Sanskrit text
Black and grey · Flash
A full-length drawing of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha standing in a three-quarter pose, holding an axe and a bowl of sweets in his hands. The figure is rendered in fine, detailed black and grey linework with dense hatching and stippled shading, and he wears ornate jewellery, a crown and a sacred thread. A small mouse sits at lower right, and a line of Sanskrit script runs along the bottom within a patterned oval border on a light background.

Every obstacle Dev met that week was small and stupid, and Mushak was fairly sure someone with a sense of humour and a fondness for sugar was arranging them.

He climbed the shelf where the brass figure stood, the one with the axe in one hand and the bowl in the other, and nibbled the thread at its ankle until the god opened one eye. 'You have been very busy,' said Ganesha. 'Dev is busy too. He has not eaten since Tuesday.'
'Then he should learn to count his own sweets,' said Mushak, and he pushed the bowl off the shelf so that the modaks rolled across the floorboards like small golden moons. The god sighed the sigh of someone who had been carrying a rodent on his back for a very long time, and he lifted the axe.
In the morning Dev came down to find the drain clear, the lamp burning steady, and the glass case whole. On the counter sat a single modak wrapped in a banana leaf, with one bite taken out of it and a row of tiny teeth marks along the rim. Dev laughed until he had to sit down on the step, then he sold the first tray before breakfast and kept the leaf in his apron pocket all day.
