Armoured robot and galaxy on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large armoured robot figure with cannon-like limbs and a rounded helmet fills the upper arm, with a rounded head and a pointed foot-like part at the bottom. Behind it sit a swirling galaxy, scattered stars, dark blue space tones and a few orange autumn leaves, all drawn with bold outlines and smooth shading. The palette is rich and mostly colour, with browns, golds, purples and teal, and the design wraps around the shoulder.

The war-engine came down the lane in October, when the apples were already in the press and the leaves were coming off the beeches in handfuls. Nobody in Thornbury knew whose it had been. Its helmet was dented, one cannon arm had been stripped for scrap, and it walked with a limp that made the children call it Lame Tom. Old Ada Pennock gave it a bed in the barn and a bucket of windfalls, and it ate them one at a time, slowly, like a man counting coins.

Through the winter it swept the yard and mended the gate hinges with its good hand. In spring it climbed the hill above the orchard and sat there all night with its eyes lit purple, watching the sky. Ada asked it once what it was looking at. It pointed with its foot at a smear of light low over the ridge, a spiral of blue and violet dust, and said in a voice like a cold bell that the map home was written in the stars.
Ada told it there was no shame in staying put, that Thornbury had cider and a fire and a bed. The machine thought about this for three nights. On the fourth morning the leaves were falling gold and rust, and it had gone, leaving a row of neat boot-prints up the hill and one windfall balanced on the gate post. Ada ate the apple herself. It was so sweet she wept over the sink.
Years later a drover swore he saw a shape climbing the ridge with the stars behind it, and that the whole sky turned the colour of a bruise and then bright as a forge. Ada said it was only the north light. She kept the gate post with its hinge unbent and left a windfall there every October, in case the lane brought him back.
