Mech with cherry blossoms and kanji
Japanese · Mixed · Photo
A teal and yellow robotic mech figure sits diagonally across the design, with grey shading on its armour plates and yellow accents on its joints. Pink cherry blossoms with yellow centres and grey branches surround the mech, and two black kanji characters appear above and below it. The colours are bright and fairly saturated against the grey branches and black lettering, with the design filling the frame.

Nobody on the night ward at Carrow Hill could say where the blue machine came from. It arrived in the flu winter, folded small in the back of a delivery van, and it unfolded itself on the floor of the linen room with a noise like someone clearing their throat. Sister Agnes said it had been sent to move the heavy beds and the oxygen bottles, and that was true, so for three weeks nobody asked it anything else.

It had a yellow band round its middle and a way of going still when the monitors fell quiet. Dennis, who worked the late porter's shift and drank his tea standing up, noticed that when a bell rang in a panic the machine rolled toward it slowly, the way an old dog goes to a door, and then waited with its arms folded until the nurse came out. It never hurried. The ward began to lower its voice when it passed, as if it were a patient too.
In February a boy in bed four stopped sleeping. He was eight and had a cough that kept him awake, and every night he watched the machine sit in the corner of the bay with its head tipped forward. On the fourth night he asked it what it was waiting for. The machine did not answer, because it had been built to carry and not to talk, but its visor lit a little brighter.
In the morning the bed by the window was empty and the machine was gone. On the sill lay a scatter of pink petals, though the cherry trees in the car park were still bare. Dennis swept them into his palm and found they were warm, the way a hand is warm after holding a cup.
