Roulette wheel, dice and ace of spades on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed tattoo covers the forearm, showing a roulette wheel with its metal rim and spokes rising through wisps of smoke. An ace of spades playing card, dice and a stack of poker chips sit across the lower part of the design. Smooth grey shading and strong black contrast create depth, and three photographs show the piece from front and side angles.

The wheel had come up the Caddon Pass on the back of a mule, wrapped in sacking, and it was the only thing in the hut that did not shiver. Ottilie Marr fed the stove with split larch while four men leaned over the baize and pushed their chips into the middle, their breath hanging in the lamplight like smoke from their pipes. Nobody up there called it a casino. They called it the table, and it had been running since the first snow shut the road to the valley and nobody could walk down to pay a debt.

Ottilie had dealt for her father in Turin before he lost the lease, and she knew the sound a ball made when it was hunting for a slot and the sound it made when it had already decided. Tonight the ball was restless. It clattered over the spokes, tipped over the frets, and settled on red. The stranger at the end of the table, a thin man called Aurelio Quint who had arrived with the blizzard and no luggage, smiled as though he had expected it. He had won three rounds running, and his pile of silver stood taller than the candle.
At midnight he laid the ace of spades from the shoe face up and asked for the hut itself. Ottilie looked at the card for a long time. Then she set her palm on the rim, felt the cold iron, and gave the wheel one hard push. It turned, and turned, and the ball ran the rim until the lamp guttered. When the light came back, the chips had gone from Quint's side and the ace lay on hers. Outside, the snow had stopped. Quint was already gone, his tracks filling behind him. She cleared the table and left the wheel turning, slow, for nobody.
