Armoured winged knight with sword on a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large back piece shows an armoured figure with feathered wings and a glowing circle behind its head, holding a long sword point-down in front of its body. The linework is fine and the wings and armour are built up with dense black and grey shading that gives strong depth and highlights. The design fills the whole upper back, with soft grey shading fading into the surrounding skin.

The bells of Saint Ebba had not rung for a wedding in forty years, so when Mara Holloway set her hand on the church door, the sexton came out of his cottage with his coat half on and asked her what she thought she was doing. She said she was to be married at noon. He said the groom was in the ground. She said she knew that, and that the groom would come anyway, if someone rang the bells properly.

Her grandmother had told her the story at the kitchen range. Long ago a knight named Aldred Crane had ridden out to fight the marsh wolves that came up the river each winter, and he had not come back. His armour was dark with river mud and his wings, which no one had known he had, were folded under his cloak. The villagers said an angel had taken his shape to guard them, and that he kneeled every night in the church with his sword driven point-down into the flagstones, waiting for someone to ask him to stand.

Mara pulled the bell rope until her palms burned. Nothing came from the tower but dust. Then, from the dark behind the altar, a sound like a heavy coat being shaken out. The stone knight rose from the flagstones, the glow behind his helm spreading like a low winter moon, and he lifted the sword from the floor.

"You are late," Mara said.

"I was waiting for the bells," said Aldred, and he offered her his arm.
