Egyptian pharaohs and winged disc on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Three views of the same leg show a large Egyptian themed tattoo with a winged sun disc at the top and pharaoh figures set among clouds. The shading is smooth and detailed, with deep black behind soft grey highlights on the figures and stone-like surfaces. The design wraps around the calf, with the figures running down the leg and clouds framing the lower section.

The crate had been nailed shut since 1931, and Margit Hale lost two fingernails prising the lid off with a bent chisel while the night porter stood in the doorway pretending not to watch. Inside, packed in straw gone the colour of weak tea, lay a limestone pair: a king in the striped nemes headdress, and a slimmer queen with one hand raised as if to hail a cab.

Her late uncle had written on the manifest in pencil, "Do not stand them upright. They remember." She had laughed at that in the spring, when the grant was still a rumour. Now she knelt by the stone and found the sun disc chipped into the plinth, its wings spread across both heads, the feathers cut so fine they caught the torchlight like wet slate. The carver had given the wings a strange heft, as though they were holding the whole crate down.

She raised them in the empty gallery after closing, with the painted clouds on the wall behind them and a single lamp angled low so the shadows would stretch. The king's stone face kept a patient expression. The queen's raised hand seemed a little higher than it had been at noon. A moth tapped at the lamp, and somewhere below the floor a pipe knocked twice.

At dawn the guard found the statues where she had left them, but the wing shadow had crept a full step across the marble, and it pointed at the door. Margit wrote the accession number in the ledger, then, after a long moment, the word "returned" in the margin, and went home without her coat.
