Spread-winged eagle across upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large eagle with outspread wings is tattooed centred between the shoulder blades, seen from behind with the head of the subject out of frame. The design uses bold solid black fills and patterned feather detail, with the wing tips reaching towards both shoulders. The tattoo is in black and grey only, set against warm, evenly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Agnes Rowan had kept the light at Scarrow Head for eleven winters, and in all that time the eagle had never once landed on the gallery rail while she was watching. It came when she turned her back, the way the boy from the fish shop swore it did, and she had decided that was a thing a person could live alongside. This morning the gulls were crowding the shingle and the lamp had guttered at four, and when she stepped out with the oil can the bird was already there, perched on the brass housing with its wings held wide against the wind.

She climbed the iron stair slowly, counting the treads because her knees had opinions about them. The bird didn't stir. Its feathers were laid in flat black strokes, each one notched like a saw blade, and she knew that pattern from the bow of the Margaret Lyle, the drifter her husband Tom had sailed out of the harbour the March he didn't come back. He had painted it there himself, one long afternoon with a tin of tar and a borrowed brush, because he said a boat needed something watching over it that couldn't be drowned. Agnes had thought it foolish. She had never told him she thought it was beautiful.

She told the bird it was late, which was foolish too. She filled the font, trimmed the wick and struck the match. When the flame caught and the great lens began to turn, the eagle lifted, its shadow sweeping across the glass and out over the water. Far off, a small red light blinked once, then again, steady and coming in. She stood with the can in her hand until the Margaret Lyle's lamp swung past the point, and then she wiped the lantern glass clean with her sleeve so that it would be clear for him to see.
