Arrow and diamond spine tattoo
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical tattoo runs along the spine, starting with an arrowhead near the neck and continuing through a fine-lined diamond with a central dot, small bird silhouettes, and a column of dots and a lower diamond. The linework is thin and precise, with solid black fills on some shapes. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against bare skin and a plain white top, with a blurred wall of pinned prints behind.

Dear Hanne, the birds came back to the north pier on Tuesday, all eleven of them, just as Mr Ferris said they would when he nailed the wind vane to the boathouse roof. I counted them from the kitchen window while the kettle went cold. They sit along the rail in a row and look out past the breakwater as if they're waiting for a boat that has already gone.

You'll laugh, but I went through the drawers in your room last night. I found the brass compass you left behind, the one with the diamond cut into its lid, and I sat on your bed turning it over until the needle stopped pointing anywhere useful. Mam says you should write when you reach Lerwick. Do it properly, not on the back of a fish receipt.
The arrow from the old chart still hangs in the porch, pointing up the coast the way the Halvorsen boys rowed the day they didn't come back. Nobody took it down. Dad used to say a thing that points true should be left alone, even when the truth is unkind. I've started to think he meant the diamond too, and the little dot inside it that you always said was the boat while everything else was just weather.
Keep the compass. Post me one bird feather in an envelope, something small I can set on the sill. The count is ten now without you here to tally them, and I'd like to know which of us has been getting it wrong.
