Arrow and coordinates on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A red painted-style splash sits behind a white bow silhouette with two arrows, with a black "50" beneath it. Below, bold black numerals read "48500n 3500°E" alongside a large looping script letter. The solid red shape and black lettering are crisp on the forearm, with a plain, blurred background.

Monsieur Aubry says the grass has grown through the straw, but he sent the boys out with rakes and a tin of red paint, and by Sunday the rings were bright enough to see from the road.

You will laugh, but they asked me to shoot the first arrow. Fifty paces, the same distance you and I used behind the barn when we were nine and too proud to be sensible. My bow is still in the cupboard under the stairs, wrapped in your old school jumper, so I took it out and strung it with the cord from the washing line, which Papa would have called a disgrace.
The first arrow went wide into the hedge. The second struck the red and stood there trembling, and nobody cheered, because we were all staring at the hedge where the first had gone. Aubry walked out with his notebook and wrote the position down as carefully as any surveyor: forty-eight degrees and a half north, three and a half east, in pencil, as though the field might be taken from us if we did not record it properly.
Come home at Easter. I will show you where the first arrow landed. I have marked the spot with a white stone, and if you find it before I do, you may keep the notebook. Your sister.
