Wave inside an inverted triangle on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large curling wave with spray at its crest sits inside an outlined triangle pointing downwards, with the lower part of the triangle filled by layered sea. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading and pale highlights left as bare skin in the foam. The photo is taken straight on against a blurred grey background, with a sleeve visible at the top edge.

Nell had been told the mark was a promise, not a warning, and at nine years old she believed it. Each morning her father chalked an inverted triangle on the harbour wall above the bar, point down, the way the pilots had always done it, and inside it he drew the swell as he read it off the water. Tide going out, he said, the sea is spending itself. Keep the boats in.

The October the lifeboat did not come back, Nell took the chalk from his coat pocket. The men on the slip told her she was too young to read the bar, and she agreed with them, but she drew the triangle anyway. Inside it she drew a big sea the way he had taught her, a crest bending over and breaking on itself, and she shaded the water beneath in long strokes until her fingers were grey to the knuckle. Nobody came down to argue with her.
Two days later the rain came in sideways and the chalk ran. Nell stood at the wall with a bucket and watched the lines soften, the triangle going pale and then going altogether. What stayed longest was the lower part, where she had worked the sea hardest, and the harbourmaster stood beside her a long while looking at it before he said the bar had been flat all week.
Next morning she chalked the mark again, point down, and drew nothing inside it. She left the lower corner blank and let the grey stone show through, the way the foam was left bare on the water, and she went home for her tea.
