Fine line black tattoo of an arrow, overlapping triangles, a circle and a rose stacked vertically on the inner upper arm.

Arrow, circle and rose on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black fine line tattoo shows an arrow pointing upwards, two overlapping triangles, a open circle and an outlined rose stacked in a vertical column. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the design is set against plain, pale skin on a soft, light background. The composition is centred on the inner upper arm with a dark fabric sleeve visible at the right edge.

The stone at Cold Ford had no name cut into it, only signs, because the men who set it were shepherds and could not spell. The arrow at the top pointed north, towards the high pass. Below it were two triangles, one turned down towards the water and one turned up towards the hills, and everyone who crossed knew to keep the upward one on their left hand.

Under the triangles was a circle, scratched open at the top so the rain would drain from it. The ferryman's daughter, Maud Tennant, said it was the well at Penhallow, where a stranger could drink for nothing. Lowest of all was a rose. Nobody remembered who had carved it. It was the only sign cut by a hand that had not been told what to make.

One October a drover named Peter Vosse came down from the pass with forty sheep and a sprained wrist, and he stopped at the stone because the light was going. He read the signs the way his father had taught him: arrow, triangles, well, and then the rose, which made no sense to him. He sat with his back against the stone and ate his bread until the moon came up over the water.

In the morning he saw that the rose sat exactly where the road bent into the lane for his own village. He had walked past it every autumn for twenty years without once looking down. He took the lowest sign for the last one, as the shepherds always had, and went on with his sheep.
