Lotus flower on an inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single lotus flower is drawn in thin black linework, with layered petals, curled inner details and a small oval centre. Three small dotted arcs and droplet shapes sit beneath the flower. The tattoo is in black ink only, placed on the inner forearm against plain light skin and a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are kneeling on the wet flags of the cloister garth when Brother Anselm calls your name a third time, and still you do not rise. The lotus in the stone tank has begun to open. Its outer petals have loosened slowly through the night, layer by layer, and the water beading on them runs down to the rim in small drops that the cold will freeze before Vespers. Anselm has kept this tank for forty winters. He says the flower sleeps in the mud and wakes only when nobody is watching.

"Come away," he says, and you do. In the scriptorium the bell rope hangs still and the copyists bend over their vellum. Anselm takes down the ledger his predecessor kept. Each page holds a column of dates, and beside some of them is a row of small ink dots, like stitches, with a single drop drawn underneath and never explained. "Those are the mornings the flower opened," he says. "The drops are the ones I was not here to see."

You ask him what they mean, but he only takes you back out to the garth. The sun has cleared the wall, and the petals are darkening at their tips as the water lifts away. At the heart of the bloom the small curled scrolls are unwinding. You count the three dotted arcs beneath the flower and realise he has been teaching you the count all along, because he knows he will not be here to see the next one. He presses the quill into your hand. You make the next dot yourself, then the drop, and leave the page open for whoever comes after.
