Mushrooms in a triangle on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of mushrooms with rounded caps and stems fills a triangle outlined in fine black linework. The mushrooms are built from stippled dots and short hatching, with the shading fading toward the edges of the triangle. The design is in black ink only, shown in close view on a pale forearm against a plain light background.

The cellar smelled of wet slate and paraffin, and by the second week of October they had come up again between the oil drums, pale caps crowded into the corner where the rock sweats through the wall. Donnie brings the boat out from Ardvoe every third Tuesday, and he stood at the bottom of the stair with his cap in his hands and looked at the corner the way you look at a dog that has got into the bins. "Leave them be, Ewan," he said. "Nothing down there is going to hurt you that isn't already in the oil." He would not take a tin of them for his wife, though she has asked for years.

So I left them. I took to going down with the hurricane lamp at the change of the watch, when the beam from the gallery was turning over the water. Through the little gable window at the top of the stair, the light came in once every ten seconds and laid a bright triangle across the floor, and in that triangle the mushrooms stood up sharp as shell, their gills dark as the ink on the tide tables. Then the dark came back and they were only shapes I knew were there.

I wrote it in the log that night, under the weather and the lamp hours: Fungi, a dozen or so, cellar store. Left standing. The light came round again and I did not go to bed for a while, counting the flashes and then the caps, and finding the numbers came out even.
