Dear Tom, the fair pulled out of Hexham on Tuesday and we're camped on a stubble field outside Morpeth now, with the wind coming straight off the sea and the caravans rocking like boats. Dad has given up on the coconut shy. Mum sells the dreamcatchers from the back of the van, the ones with three feathers, and says the birds that come down to the stubble are the only customers who never haggle.

You'd laugh at me on the rifle stall. Mr Pascoe says I've got the eye for it now, so I'm the one who lets the kids have five shots for a pound. Last Saturday a lad of about nine asked me whether the arrows went anywhere once they'd left the gallery.
