Bow and radiating arrows line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil or ink line drawing on tracing paper, showing a bow at the centre with arrows fanning outwards like a compass rose. Feathers are drawn at the tips of several arrows, and a small ornate mandala-style flower sits above the main design. The linework is fine and black on a pale background, with no shading or colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cook aboard the Thessaly Rose kept a bow hanging above the range, and nobody was to touch it. It had belonged to a deckhand called Tobias Wane, who came aboard at Cork with nothing but a canvas sack and a habit of shooting gulls off the rigging. He was dead of fever before the ship reached the Azores, and the cook, a widow named Mary Lusk, took the bow down from his bunk because nobody else wanted the job of sorting it.

She found the arrows in a tin under the bunk, a dozen of them, each fletched with a different bird. Heron, gull, a grey feather she could not name. Lusk knew nothing of archery but she knew cutting and she knew the sea, so she laid the arrows out on the galley table in a ring, points outward, the way a navigator lays out his charts.

The fishermen came to the galley that night for their supper and the bow was still on the wall. Old Harrow, who had sailed the Atlantic for forty years, said the Wane boy had been taught by a woman in Galway who told him a bow must always point somewhere it could not be seen from. Lusk said that was nonsense. She fed them broth and said nothing else.

In the morning the wind had died and the compass needle would not settle. Lusk took the bow down, drew one arrow with her thumb against the string, and let it fly through the open hatch. It landed in the water a hundred yards off, feathers up, and the needle swung and stopped. Harrow said nothing for a long time. Then he took off his cap.
