Arrow, feathers and dreamcatcher design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil or ink drawing on grey paper shows a tattoo design of an arrow with feathered fletching, a small dreamcatcher hung with three feathers, and three birds flying to the left. The word love is written in looping script along the arrow shaft. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the composition runs diagonally across the sheet.

The last swifts had gone south over the salt flats the summer the wells dried, and nobody in Harrowmere expected to see birds again. So when Ada Vane came up from the lower terraces with a crow's feather tucked behind her ear, the women at the grain store stopped weighing to look at her.

She had found the feather caught in a dreamcatcher hung on the old pylon at the scrap line. Her grandmother had hung it there, people said, the way the old makers hung them on doorposts to catch bad sleep. The hoop was wire wound with sinew, three flight feathers hung from its base, grey and brown, and the wind had worked the web loose years before. Ada took the hoop down and carried it home under her coat.

Her brother Tam wanted to sell it for the copper. Ada wanted to know what it had been catching. They argued through the night, and in the morning they climbed the pylon together and found, tied to the crossbar, a shaft of ash with a flint head and a fletching of pale feathers. Under it, scratched into a plate of tin, was a word in looping letters that nobody in the valley could read except Tam, who had learned from the books in the schoolroom before it burned.

Tam read it out. Ada laughed, then stopped laughing. Far off, three birds lifted from the dust and turned west, toward the sea that had gone.
