Arrow tattoo design in black ink
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing of an arrow on off-white paper, with a feathered fletching at the top, a small diamond-shaped motif along the shaft and a hatched, geometric arrowhead at the bottom. The linework is fine and even, with parallel hatching and outlined shapes, and the design is drawn in black ink only. A black fineliner pen lies diagonally across the upper right of the frame.

The gull had got into the mackerel again, so Maud Tregear hung what was left on the nail by the loft door and sat back down at the sail locker with her grandfather's tide book open beside her paper. The arrow in the margin was his, drawn in April, and she had spent three evenings trying to copy it without the wobble in the shaft that his hand never allowed.

He had never been much of a fletcher. He was a man who counted things. The diamonds along the shaft were the lamps on the breakwater, one for each light the harbour board had promised and never lit. The feathering at the top stood for the boats still out past the bar the winter the Ellen Rowe went down in the big swell, and he had drawn one barb for every name shouted on the quay that morning.
Maud took a finer nib from the tin of pens Teodor had left at the chandler's and began the hatching on the head, parallel lines running across the page the way wind runs across water. The ink held steady until the last shape, where she pressed too hard and the point split and spat. She went over it in pencil, and the line came out grey and uncertain against the black.
She turned the page so the arrow pointed through the loft window, out toward the bar, where the lamps of the Wren were coming in one by one. Her grandfather would have counted them. Maud let them come in uncounted and blew the grey dust from the paper.
