Sketched arrow, feather, antler and revolver designs
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A sketchbook page with pen drawings of a feather, an arrow with a dotted arrowhead, a branching antler and a revolver at the top edge. The linework is fine and precise, with hatching and stippling used for shading and texture. The drawings are in black ink on cream paper, with a pen lying diagonally across the right side of the page.

The antler is still warm from the bracken when you lift it, and the village has already decided the stag went mad before it died. You carry it down the lane past the fletcher's shed, tines knocking your knee at every step, and you do not look back at the beech line where the poachers' dogs are barking.

Your uncle Ned keeps a sketchbook in the drawer beside the vice. Every design he ever cut into wood started there in fine black ink: the feather he used for the wedding bows, the arrow with its dotted head that he swore would fly true, the revolver a traveller left in pawn and never came back to claim. You turn the pages with inky fingers while the kettle goes cold. Ned's drawings are clever, but they are never finished. He always stops one line short of the thing.
That evening you sit at the bench and draw the antler the way the wood wants it, branching into its own fork, hatching each tine until the grain shows through. You stipple the tip until it looks like frost. Ned comes in, looks over your shoulder, and says nothing for so long the lamp begins to hiss. Then he takes the pen from your hand, adds a single feather curling off the base, and pushes the book back across the bench.
"Finish it," he says, so you do. The arrow you draw last points at the open door, and when you step out into the lane the forest is quiet and dark, and the page is still lying on the bench with the pen beside it, waiting for someone braver than either of you to pick it up.
