Arrow tattoos on crossed fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together with the fingers crossed, and each shows a small arrow tattoo in black ink. The arrows have thin, even outlines with simple feathered tails and no shading. The background is a car interior with a blurred rear window, and the composition is close and casual.

They had made the pact on the back step that same August, palms pressed together and fingers crossed so hard it hurt. Bea swore she would be the one to leave first. Ruth swore she would be the one waiting at the end of the pier with a flask of tea. Neither of them could remember who had drawn the arrows, only that they had done it with a biro borrowed from the chapel noticeboard, one shaft pointing west and one pointing east, so that whichever way the other went, the pair still faced the same road.
The coach stopped at Lancaster and the driver sighed through the open door. Bea finally opened her eyes. "You kept the flask," she said, as if it were an accusation.
Ruth unscrewed it, still warm, and poured the tea into the cap. "I had them made permanent," she said, and turned her hand over so the two small shafts lined up in the grey light, both pointing at the same door.
