Two people hold hands in a black and white photograph, showing a chess king tattoo on one forearm and a chess queen tattoo on the other. Both pieces are rendered in soft grey shading with defined outlines, giving them a three-dimensional look. The bright background keeps the focus on the arms and the clasped hands.

Dear Hilda,

The frost came early to the valley this year, and Brother Oswin has taken to carrying the chess set down to the cellar so the pieces do not crack in the cold. You will laugh, but I have been losing to him for eleven winters, and he still keeps the box lid turned away from me while he sets up, as though the pieces might tell me his plans.

The set is old, boxwood and ebony, and the black queen has a chip at her crown that the novices swear came from a dropped candlestick. Oswin says the king and queen were carved by the same hand the year the abbey bell cracked, and that they were never meant to stand more than a hand's width apart. When I asked him why, he only moved his king one square forward and said a king who wanders is a king who needs guarding.

Last Thursday I beat him. I took his queen with a knight I had been nursing for twenty moves, and he sat very still for a long while before laughing so hard he had to hold the table. He said the game was over but the match was not, and then he wrote something in the ledger that I am not permitted to read.

This morning I found the black queen on my windowsill, lifted from the board, with the king set down beside her. Oswin says it is a message I must work out for myself. I have not yet decided whether it means checkmate or an invitation, and I suspect he does not know either. Write back soon, and tell me what you think he is trying to say.

Your loving brother, Edmund
