Infinity symbol with numbers on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph taken inside a car shows an arm raised against the door frame, with a tattoo on the forearm. The tattoo is an infinity symbol with the numerals 4, 3 and 11 written in a flowing script inside its loops. The linework is dark and even, and the greyscale photo gives the piece a crisp, clean look against the skin.

Dear Tom, The chain on the postern gate has finally seized, so I have been sending the carrier round by the lane with the key taped under a tin of linseed. You will not believe what the Dunmere men found under the kitchen flags on Tuesday. A loop of iron, rusted into the shape of an eight lying on its side, and scratched beside it, in the same careful hand as the sundial, the numbers four, three and eleven.

Mrs Achterberg from the parish reckons it is a date, the fourth of March in some year before the civil war, but the church register has no such entry. I think it is a count. Every evening the old lamp-lighter, a man called Ivo Trusk, walked the curtain wall four times, then three times along the moat, and on the eleventh night of each month he lit the beacon on the keep. Whatever he was counting, he counted it round and round the same figure, as if the sum never had to finish.
I went up on Thursday with a torch and a bad knee and walked his route. Four circuits of the wall took me most of an hour, the ravens watching me as though I owed them rent. At the top of the keep, where the beacon iron still stands, the lead was warm in the sun and the valley was full of mist that ran all the way to the sea and back again. I struck a match on the eleventh stone, just to see.
The match burned down to my fingers and nothing else happened, which I suppose is what Ivo must have liked about it. Come up at Easter. Bring the good pencils. I want you to draw me the loop properly, so we can see where it begins.
