Art Nouveau flash sheet in black

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A sheet of separate black and white design motifs in an Art Nouveau style. They include roses, a woman with flowing hair and lilies, a peacock, a tree with spreading branches, a long scrolling border, and several circular medallions with faces and floral forms. The linework is bold and solid, with fine detail in the ornamental panels, and the layout is arranged in a loose grid with no colour.

The glass-maker's daughter in Vellan had hair the colour of dry honey, and when the lamps were lit along the canal she would stand at the window of the workshop and let it fall loose so the cutters below could see it. Her father said this was vanity. Her mother said it was the only light in the house worth paying for. Neither of them noticed that the peacock feathers she kept in a jar on the sill had been arranged, one by one, into a pattern like a gate.

The prince's men came in the wet month of October, asking for a window that could hold a sunset. Her father sold them three panes of rose-flashed glass and kept the fourth back, because it was the one with the bird in it, the bird that rose out of the glass when you held it to the candle, its tail spreading into a fan of eyes. He had cut it himself, years before, from a dream he did not discuss. The men took the other three and left the fourth on the bench, and in the morning the bench was empty and the window was gone from the wall.

The girl followed the trail of rose petals as far as the forest where the oaks grew so close their branches knotted into a roof. Beneath them stood a man with a face like a carved medallion, hands full of ivy, who did not look up when she came. "You are the one who sees the eyes," he said. "Then you may have the window back, if you can tell me which of my tail-feathers is false." She counted them in the dark, slowly, the way her mother counted coins, and when she reached the last she set her finger on the glass he had hidden there and said, "This one. It is mine." The forest went quiet, and the lamps of Vellan came on, one by one, through the trees.
