Black and grey · Flash

Five separate black line-art designs stacked on a white background, each showing a stylised bird or peacock built from paisley shapes. The linework is bold and even, with dense filled patterns of dots, scrolls and petals inside the bodies and tails. The sheet is entirely black ink on white, with the designs arranged in a loose vertical column.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third well had gone bitter by the time Ruhi found the cracked water jar in the back of the cart, its belly painted with a bird made of curling black shapes. She lifted it out and turned it in the lamplight while her uncle Bahram cursed the camels for stopping again. The bird's tail was packed with dots, scrolls and small petals, each one drawn with a steady hand.

"My mother's mother painted those," Bahram said, not looking up from the reins. "Every bird is a map. Count the dots in the tail and you know how many days of dry road lie before the next spring. Count wrong and you drink sand." Ruhi had heard this story every summer of her life and never once believed it. She counted anyway, moving her finger along the feathers. A hundred and four.

The caravan turned south at dawn, away from the road the others had taken. Ruhi walked at the front with the jar held against her hip, stopping at each ridge of dune to count the marks she had cut into the cart rail. By the second night the men had stopped laughing at her. By the third they were quiet, watching her face in the grey light. At noon they found a spring under a fallen tamarisk, its water sweet enough to make the old men weep.

That evening Ruhi took a fresh jar from the stack and dipped a brush in ink. She did not paint a bird. She painted the outline of a tail and left the inside empty, a hundred and four small spaces waiting for someone else's count.
