Art Nouveau woman and red bells on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A woman in a flowing dress sits in an arched frame beside a pair of skulls, with a vine of red bell-shaped flowers curling above the frame. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft shading on the figure and dress. Muted greens, yellows and reds dominate, and the design wraps along the inside of the forearm, which is shown against a grey top and dark background.

At the top, in the arched niche beside the ladder, Mrs Ansell sat every evening with her sewing and the two skulls the diggers had turned up under the nave. She said they were her husband's brothers, though the parish register gave no such names. "Bells crack when they're poured too hot," she told me once, not looking up. "Someone has to hold the metal still while it cools." I didn't understand her until the spring the foundry downriver wrote to say the old bell could be melted and recast.
We lowered it on a cart with bellflowers Mrs Ansell had woven into the rope, red as sealing wax. She made me promise to bury the skulls beside her husband before the new bell went up, and I did. When it came back, its note was so clean it stung the teeth. By morning the red flowers had pushed up through the frost at the foot of the tower, climbing the stone as if they had been waiting for the sound. I rang it at dusk and watched the arch stay empty.
