Barn owl and roses on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A barn owl sits among rose stems and leaves that run up the forearm towards the elbow. Fine linework and grey shading define the owl's face and feathers, while the roses have soft pink tones. The arm rests against a dark knit top, and a plain ring is visible on one finger.

Pell came down the ladder with the owl in a canvas sack, and I knew from the way she held it away from her chest that the bird had stopped eating. Barn owls do not complain. They go still and pale and wait, and this one had been waiting since the seed vault flooded on the ninth orbit.

We had brought seven of them up from the last surface reserve on Earth, back when the cargo lift still ran on schedule. Six died in the first winter cycle, their feathers greying in the recycled air. This one survived because Mirela fed it voles from the grain stores and sang to it in a language nobody else aboard remembered. The roses were older than the owls. Mirela had carried cuttings in a jar of water through three lift transfers, and now they climbed the trellises of the lower dome in pink, thorny ropes that smelt faintly of rain.
I opened the sack over the rose bed and waited. The owl turned its heart-shaped face towards the grow lamps, then towards the stems, and climbed them one clawed step at a time until it reached a bloom the colour of old brick. It shook out its wings. Pell started to cry. I did not stop her, because the bird had chosen its own perch for the first time since we left the sky, and none of us could remember the last thing aboard that had done the same.
