Art nouveau woman on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A standing woman with flowers in her hair wears a flowing blue robe with small dotted detailing, one hand raised near her face. She is framed by sweeping pale swirls, a crescent moon and scattered yellow stars, with a dark drapery shape at the lower edge. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with colour washes of blue, yellow and pink on pale skin, shown in a full-length view of the leg.

The lamp above the crossing hut has been humming all night, and the moths have given up on it. You have stamped forty passports since midnight, and the last one belongs to a woman in a dark blue robe with a wreath of pale flowers pinned into her hair. She carries no luggage, only a roll of paper under one arm. The officer on the other side of the glass squints at her photograph and then at her face, and you watch him decide not to ask.

"Purpose of travel?" you say, because the form requires it. She lifts one hand to her cheek, the way people do when they are weighing a lie they will not tell. "I am taking the moon back to the people who painted it," she says, in an accent the atlas has not bothered to name. Outside, the mist that comes off the river at this hour curls around the fence posts like hair in a bath, and a yellow light blinks twice somewhere over the water and then holds steady.
You should refuse her. Instead you open the drawer where the stamps are kept and find the stamp already inked, though you did not ink it. The date on it is tomorrow's. You press it into her page anyway. She thanks you, rolls the paper a little tighter, and walks through the gap beside the barrier where the gate has never once been locked.
When your relief arrives at six, the sky over the water is a blue so pale it looks wet, and small gold dots are stuck to the inside of your booth's glass, as if someone counted the stars on their way out and could not bring themselves to sweep them up.
