Figure under a starburst within a snowflake frame on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

An oval frame holds a night scene of a small figure in a long flowing gown, reaching up towards a bright starburst of light above snowy mountains. Blue snowflakes of varying sizes surround the frame, with soft gradients and fine highlights suggesting depth and glow. The palette is mostly blues, with pale white light at the centre, and the design fills the thigh with the frame centred on the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every winter the night porter at St Brannock's went up the back stairs to the roof when the ward lights dimmed, because her grandmother had said the sky over the moors was the only thing that kept the cold honest. Nobody on the wards knew this. They knew only that Mrs Oddie on Fourth had stopped calling out at three o'clock, and that the lift to Theatre never stuck when Ada was on.

One January the frost came down so hard that the windows on the north wing grew ferns from the inside. A young registrar named Tomas Reid, new from the city, found her on the roof with a flask and asked what she was looking for. She said she was looking for the star that had come down the year her grandmother was born, the one that went cold and white over the mountains and never quite left. Tomas laughed, then didn't, because the sky over the hills was doing something he had no word for.

Ada told him the old story plainly. A woman in a long grey gown climbed the snow to the top of the hill each night and lifted her hand, and a light answered her, and wherever the light fell the sick slept easy until morning. The woman stopped coming when people stopped asking her for anything. So Ada asked for nothing. She only reached.

Tomas went back down to Fourth. He sat with Mrs Oddie until the lights came up grey over the car park, and she slept without a sound. The lift to Theatre ran clean all week. Nobody thanked the porter, and she did not expect them to. Each night after that, the frost ferns on the north glass melted a little earlier than the ones on the south.
