Watercolour sketch tattoo of Belle and the Beast dancing, with yellow, blue and orange washes, on a limb.

Belle and the Beast watercolour sketch

Other · Mixed · Photo

A woman in a yellow gown dances with a blue-clad beast, drawn in loose black linework. Soft yellow, orange and blue washes with splatter effects fill the figures and surrounding skin. The figures fill most of the frame, with the outline trailing off at the lower edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The yellow gown had been cut from the last bolt of dyed cotton in Marlow's shop, and Ada Pryce had sat up three nights stitching it by the window of the back room. Her table was never clear of paint. Walter Crake mixed his blues on it while he waited for her to finish pinning, so the cloth picked up a little of everything, orange at the hem and a smear of cobalt on the sleeve she could never quite lift out. He was a sign painter, large and quiet, and the whole of Hallam Street called him the Bear because he ducked under the lintel of every door he went through.

The Harvest Ball was to be held in the Co-operative hall, and Walter had been commissioned to paint the banner that hung above the stage. It was meant to show the town's name in gold. Instead, in the week before the dance, the banner grew a dark, scrawled outline of a man bending towards a woman, and the gold lettering never came. Ada told the Women's Guild it was a disgrace. She told her mother she would not dance with him if he asked, and then she put on the gown anyway and walked the mile to the hall with her shoes in her hand.

The band struck up a waltz in the wrong key. Walter crossed the floor with paint still drying on his cuff, and when he took her hand the gold of her skirt bled a little more orange into the blue on his coat. Nobody said anything. The Guild ladies stopped whispering. They turned slowly on the boards, and the stage light caught the splashes on the floor and made them look like something spilled on purpose.

In the morning the banner was still hanging, unfinished, with a yellow stain across the blue of the beast's shoulder. Beneath it, in small careful capitals he had painted before he left, were the words DANCE WITH ME, which the town decided to leave where they were.
