A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The well froze hard that January, so Ada broke the skin of ice with the heel of the pail and carried water up the lane without spilling a drop. Old Tobias Hollin watched her from the gate with his hands buried in his coat. He had waited all week to ask her, because the ewes were heavy and the snow was coming over the tops of the hills, and what he wanted could not wait for the thaw.

"Bring the flock down to the low field before dark," he said. "Make the wind drop. And keep alive the lamb the fox left in the ditch." Ada set the pail down and looked at him the way her grandmother had taught her to look at weather. Years back, lost on the hill as a child, she had made a bargain with the thing that lived under the cairn. It had asked only that she answer every honest request with the same three words, and she had written them on her finger in soot, then in ink from her father's pen, so she would not forget. "As you wish," she said, and went to fetch the dogs.

The wind dropped as she crossed the field. At dusk the lamb lay alive in the straw, wet and furious, and Tobias wept into his beard while pretending he had not. But the hill keeps its own accounts. By the time the stars came out, every ewe in the low field had gone quiet, standing with their heads turned towards the cairn, and Ada felt the cold go out of her hands and settle somewhere she could not reach.

The next morning Tobias asked her to mend the gate, then for rain, then for nothing at all, only company by his fire. She opened her mouth to say no and found the same three words already waiting there, polite as a dog at the door. She rubbed at the letters on her finger. They did not come off.
