You'll remember what Dad used to say on the pier when the wind got up under our hats. I said it to the Leeds lot on Wednesday and Mrs Pardoe threw a shoe at the skylight. Well, it was a slipper, but it made the point.

On Friday the gutter over the scullery gave up and I was out on the ladder in my good cardigan, holding a bucket under it, when I saw a thin gold line along the horizon. I stood there long enough to get soaked all over again. By teatime the Bristol girl was on the front step with her face turned up like a sunflower, and Mr Cordle had found his hat.
