Roman numeral tattoos on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest together with Roman numerals tattooed along the length of two fingers, one reading V, XIV, XIII and the other reading the same numerals in reverse order. The linework is thin and crisp, shaded in solid black ink with no colour. The close, slightly angled framing puts the numerals at the centre, with bitten or short nails and a cluttered background at the bottom edge.

Dear Nell,

The 5.14 was cancelled again, so I am writing this on the back of a timetable while the kettle goes cold in the signal box. Mum says you'll come home for the wedding if the line holds, and I've told her you always did get the timings of things wrong.
You remember the clock on the down platform at Thornley, the one stuck on thirteen minutes to the hour since the winter the roof came in? Dad used to say a clock that ran against itself was honest, because it never pretended to be on time. You and I made a game of it. You would stand on the left of the bench and I on the right, and we'd count the trains in reverse, five, fourteen, thirteen, as if the numbers might take us somewhere the timetable couldn't.
Yesterday I cleared the lost property shelf and found your old brown satchel, the one with the broken clasp. Inside was the notebook where you'd copied the numerals out in pencil, first forwards, then backwards, the way we used to write our names so the other could read them in a mirror. I sat on an upturned crate for an hour with it open on my knee. The last page said only: meet under the clock when you're ready to come back.
So the 5.14 can go without me. I'll be on the platform at thirteen minutes to, reading the numbers backwards, waiting.
Love, Ruth
