Astromech droid medallion on thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a grey and white astromech droid with a red light and orange, brown and metallic details, enclosed in a black-outlined circular medallion. The shading is smooth and painterly, with soft gradients on the dome and body, and the pale blue background sits behind the figure. The circle is centred on the outer thigh, with the wearer's denim shorts and yellow top visible above it.

The little dome-headed mender had sat in the cloakroom of Holloway Lane School since the summer the boiler went, and nobody at the reunion could say who had put it there. Grandmother Tull swore it was Dennis Shaw, who had gone to sea and never written. Her grandson swore it was the caretaker. The caretaker only oiled the hall doors and said a machine that old had earned its place among the coats.

Every reunion, somebody had to go and ask it a question. That was the rule the Year Nine lot had made up and nobody had ever bothered to unmake. The droid had one red eye that flickered when it was pleased and went dark when it was sulking, and it answered with whistles and a tilt of its grey head, so you had to listen the way you listened to a kettle coming to the boil.
This year it was Mags Oddie who went in, because she was the one who had never come back before. The cloakroom smelled of wet wool and orange peel. She knelt on the lino in her good coat and asked whether the lake had frozen the winter they dared each other across it. The droid whirred. Its orange panel slid open with a sigh, and inside, folded small and gone the colour of weak tea, was a note in a child's hand that read: we all came back.
She carried it out into the hall without saying a word. Nobody needed her to. The blue lamp over the stage flickered once, the way the red eye did, and the room went quiet enough to hear the urn ticking as it cooled.
