Hello Kitty as Darth Vader tattoo
Mixed · Photo
A bold tattoo shows Hello Kitty redesigned in the black helmet and armour of Darth Vader, with a small red bow above the ears. The figure is filled with solid black ink and grey detailing, outlined in a thin white line that separates it from the skin. The composition is centred and simple, with the red bow as the only strong accent colour.

Nobody at the Hartsholme Community Hall reunion remembers your surname, but everyone remembers the cat. You drew it on the back of every maths book from Year Seven onwards: a round-headed kitten with a red bow, always the same, always slightly lopsided. By the time the sausage rolls go round you have been asked about it four times, once by a deputy head who now runs a garden centre in Ilkley.

Lorraine Pike, who sat behind you and still smells faintly of Refreshers, catches you by the squash table and thrusts her phone at your face. On the screen is a black cat in a Darth Vader helmet, a grey chest panel, a small red bow above the ears. "Sheffield, 2009," she says. "My Connor asked what a Sith was and I said I knew a woman who could draw one." She is not joking. Her eyes are wet with something between pride and rum.
You tell her the truth, which is that the Vader cat was never yours. It was hers, scribbled in Biro during a Thursday history lesson while you were both pretending to take notes on the Corn Laws. You had only copied it, and for twenty-odd years you thought the bow was the part people would remember.
Lorraine takes a folded exercise book from her handbag, its cover soft as cloth, and opens it to the back page. There, in pencil, is a helmet with a tiny red bow beside it, dated in the corner by a girl who was thirteen. "You kept it," you say. "You kept everything," she says, and the strip lights over the buffet seem to dim around the two of you, just a little.
