The tattoo shows a white and orange spherical droid with a grey dome head and a small antenna, set above a purple flower with green leaves. The droid came off the 17:42 alone, rolling down platform four on its own white and orange shell as if it held a ticket somewhere inside. You were sweeping crisp packets from under the bench when it stopped against your boot and gave a short electronic chirp, the sort a kettle makes just before it decides to boil.

Nobody at the lost property hatch at Ashby Junction would claim it. Derek from the buffet said it had been nudging through the ticket barriers since lunch, bumping gently into the legs of anyone holding a takeaway tea. Its grey dome had a crack across one side like a badly boiled egg, and the little antenna swung round to follow you whenever you moved. You took that as a kind of looking.

The lost property log had one entry that fit, in a biro hand: Collected by M. Thursday, returned to platform four, no cases. You read it twice. On Thursdays the 17:42 always ran late, and on Thursdays a woman in a green coat used to walk the length of the platform with a pressed purple flower tucked between the pages of a paperback, waiting for a train that never came. You had seen her last month. You had not thought to mention it.

So you carried the droid out into the rain, set it down where the yellow line met the edge, and watched it roll toward the bench where the green coat always sat. It stopped beside the empty seat, chirped once, and waited with you until the lights of the 17:42 swung round the bend.
