Astronaut woman with roses flash design

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A drawn profile of a woman with a short bob haircut wearing a detailed, retro-styled space helmet with a visible hose or cable at the neck. Stars, small planets and radiating pink rays surround the helmet, and two roses with leaves sit at the base of the composition. Bold black outlines define the forms, with pink, red and teal colour accents on a plain pale background.

The signal came in at a quarter past two on a Tuesday, when the whole city was asleep except the tram depot and me. I was up the ladder in the relay hut on Carrick Hill with a flask of stewed tea going cold beside the log book, and the needle jumped as if somebody had kicked the mast.

Mr Oduya, who ran the late shift before his knees gave out, had left a helmet on the hook by the door. It was a joke gift, brass rings round the crown and a grey hose coiling down to the console like an eel. Nobody had ever worn it. I put it on because the static was loud and the headphones pinched, and the moment the cups sealed over my ears the room went quiet, as if the whole night had leaned in to listen.

The voice was thin and far off. It was counting stars, one after another, and naming them after flowers: Damask, Briar, Tea. Between the numbers there was a hiss like a kettle left on. I wrote the figures in the log because that is what you do, and when I looked up the window had turned the colour of a boiled sweet, pink rays fanning out across the glass from the tower lights below. Small round planets bobbed in the fog past the railings.

I keyed back the only thing I could think of, the name of the florist on Dunmore Row who sold roses off a bucket for a shilling a stem. Two seconds later the voice laughed. At dawn the hut smelled of diesel and damp, and I found two red roses pushed through the grille of the relay door, still wet. I still don't know who they were from. The helmet hangs on the shelf now, and I wear it when the sky goes pink, just in case.
