Meditating Buddha with lotus and moon phases
Dotwork · Mixed · Flash
A meditating Buddha silhouette sits above a detailed lotus flower, surrounded by six moon phases, bare branches and a fine hexagonal outline. The Buddha's body is shaded with a swirling galaxy in blue, purple and pink, while the rest of the design uses black linework, stippling and dotwork. The composition is symmetrical and centred on the figure, with the moons arranged evenly around the edge of the hexagon.

Dear Win, The almanac arrived on Tuesday, the same green one Dad has ordered from the Halifax stationer every winter since before the war, but this year there was a folded sheet tucked inside the back cover in his square pencil hand. I have never once known him to write anything that was not an invoice.

The sheet was a drawing. He had copied out all six phases of the moon down the margin, waxing and waning, and in the middle he had sketched a lotus sitting on the dew pond behind the chapel, with a small seated figure above it, the one from Mr Ogden's shop window that went back to Bradford in March. He had shaded the figure's shoulders with a scatter of dots, the way he used to stipple the bark of the apple tree before you took the knife to it.
Underneath, he had written that he sat out last night until the frost came in, and that the sky over the mill was full of lamps nobody bothers to name. Your mother would have liked that, so I am telling you. Then nothing else, only the date and a smudge where his thumb had rested on the wet ink.
I took the sheet out to the back step with my tea going cold and sat where he sits. The moon was a thin paring over the chimneys, the sort he always said was the sky keeping its own counsel. I tried to find the seven sisters and found only four, and I stayed there until the lamp in the Ogdens' back room went out. Come home at Easter if you can. Bring the good pencils. Your loving sister, Ruth
